Do boys gamble more than girls? Let’s check.

Who prefers to play alone and how old are those who spend the most time on the controller? Sure you have a few guesses on the subject. But what do the numbers say? GamesCoin takes a close look today and shows you how long teens spend gaming on average and what the differences are between girls and guys when it comes to gaming.

Between early June and mid-July 2021, 1,200 teens ages 12 to 19 were asked how long they play games on computers, consoles, tablets and smartphones every day.

Just under half of all girls (47%) play on a screen for 1/2 to 2 hours a day. This makes them the largest group in the survey. Very few (5%) play for 4 hours or more. Compared to boys, there are more who play for less than half an hour (19%) or never play (14%).

Of the boys surveyed, only 35% sit at the video game for between 1/2 and 2 hours, as most play more on average: another 35% play for 2 to 4 hours daily and 17% get to more than 4 hours daily.

Girls prefer to play alone

Another survey by Bitkom Research in 2017 found that girls play for an average of around 89 minutes, compared to 139 minutes a day for boys. Most “frequent gamers” are between 16 and 18 years old, playing for about 3 hours or more.

Further findings from the Bitkom Research study:

  • 26 percent like to play with others in the same room
  • 27 percent play online with others
  • Girls in particular prefer to play alone

If you thought that guys generally gamble longer than girls, you were right. But would you have thought that girls prefer to play alone, or that the most frequent gamers among us are between 16 and 18 years old?
